"There can be no doubt that the son Jean-Louis, and his papa Gerard Chave, are among this planet's greatest winemakers" Robert Parker, The Worlds's Greatest Wine Estates

On offer today comes this stunning white Hermitage from one of the greatest winemakers in France - and the world!

Jean-Louis Chave makes what many consider to be the greatest Hermitage wines - multiple 100 point winners that sell for hundreds of pounds per bottle.

And yet, not content with these lofty heights, Monsieur Chave has created his Selection wines as a way for consumers to experience the Chave magic at a much more accessible price.

As with all his wines, quality is pre-eminent and it shines through in this beautiful white Hermitage, sourced from primarily from the Maison Blanche vineyard; a prime spot at the top of the Hermitage hill which is just that bit cooler than some, yielding stunningly aromatic, floral and orchard fruit-driven wines.

At just £39.50 per bottle (not bad considering the £160 cost of his main Hermitage...), it’s very rare indeed to find this sort of quality at such a reasonable price.

Once it's scored by the critics, this wonderful wine will be snapped up, so this is a fantastic chance to see why Chave are so highly rated - don't miss out!

About the wine

This is a wine of stunning concentration and beauty that greets you with deep aromas of honeysuckle, white flower, honeydew melon, peach, roasted almonds and ginger. The palate is beautifully textured - soft, oily, honeyed and just as expressive as the bouquet with very impressive length and an excellent weight. There’s a dollop of minerality and acidity in the Blanche which both refreshes the palate and brings sharper definition to the fruit. The quality of the winemaking is absolutely clear. It’s a beauty!

This white Hermitage is 100% marsanne sourced primarily from the Masion Blanche vineyard. The wine is both fermented and aged in barriques for up to two years.

About the winery

In his book, “The New France”, the famed wine writer Andrew Jefford says of Chave:

“The Chave line, which stretches back astonishingly to 1481, could make a fair claim to be France’s winemaking royal family: in no other of France’s great terroirs is the largest individual landholder so deeply rooted in time and place, so supremely competent, and so modest a custodian of the insights and craftsmanship of the past”.

Praise indeed and you’ll find it echoed in the review of every wine critic and writer across the globe. The wines of Chave are amongst the world’s very finest.

About the vineyard

Blanche” is made from fruit primarily from the lieu-dit, Maison Blanche, at the top of the Hermitage hill. The soil is iron-rich clay and loess and maintenance of the vineyard is extremely important as the top layer of loess soil erodes so easily.

Vineyard management is absolutely meticulous with low yields, full ripeness and minimal though always judicious intervention central to the way of working.

94 points - Wine Spectator (2012 vintage)
This is showing some maturity now, with warmed macadamia nut, buttered brioche, creamed peach and yellow apple flavors leading the way, backed by heather honey, mirabelle plum and white truffle accents on the finish. A flash of bitter almond gives this just the right amount of tension in the end."

18/20 points - Jancis Robinson (2012 vintage)
"Deep honey colour. Both rich and nervy at the same time. Lovely early drinking. Honeyed and almost ready; open and charming but with great undertow.”

"Clear yellow wine. Burnt butter, butterscotch, cream. Balanced acidity, long deep taste, yellow plum, minerality."  4.5/5 Stars

"Fantastic. This is flower heaven. Lovely and elegant floral notes like fresh honeysuckle. Smell also shows white peaches and a general freshness. Very light petille. Refined. Flavours of white peaches and honeysuckle and some herbs"  4.5/5 Stars

"Wow! What a superb blend, still a pup, well worth the money!4.5/5 Stars

"Golden yellow colour. Big nose, floral, nutty and waxy. A complex, full, well balanced and elegant wine with some bite to it too. Really liked this one at the wine tasting"  4/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
