High in the hills of Provence, overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean, lie the vineyards of Domaine Tempier - one of the great names of French wine.

In a region with a centuries-old tradition of winemaking, Bandol produces perhaps Provence's finest wines. And in turn, Domaine Tempier make some of the finest Bandol available.

The mourvèdre grape is the soul of Bandol and the wines it makes at Tempier are earthy, herbal, intense beauties with incredible depth and complexity.

Highly sought-after across the world, we have been extremely lucky to get our hands on a small parcel of the superb 2014 Classique from Tempier.

It is a wine that should not be missed!

About the wine

Tempier's Cuvée Classique is simply glorious Bandol!

This is a wine that always seeks to balance power and intensity with finesse and freshness. The 2014 vintage has without a doubt delivered exactly this. Pure and elegant, it is a aromatic wine that fills the glass with red berry jam backed by darker fruit - black cherry and blackberry - and notes of garrigue, earth, violets and spice. With terrific structure and dense, very high quality tannins that coat the palate yet remain velvetly and soft, it is delicious Bandol that finishes with great length and touches of earth and spice. Top class winemaking from a top class winery!

The Cuvée Classique has always been known for offering excellent drinking in its youth (although we would definitely recommend decanting first), but there’s no question that it has the potential to age for at least another decade.

A skilfully blended wine, mourvèdre makes up two-thirds with grenache, cinsault and carignan playing important supporting roles. The wine was aged for 18 months in large oak casks.

About the winery

Owned by the Peyraud family since 1936, Domaine Tempier is a jewel in the French winemaking crown having produced outstanding wines for over eight decades. Lucien Peyraud is the “High Priest of mourvèdre Bandol” having worked to secure the region is own AOC, at the same time ensuring a minimum 50% inclusion of mourvèdre in the wines.

Following his death in 1996, the property was managed by his sons who have, in turn, themselves retired and Tempier is now managed by Daniel Ravier, though still owned by the Peyraud family who are very much hands-on in the running of the domaine.

Tempier remains faithful to the tradition of ageing wine in barrels and adheres to the AOC laws that stipulate a minimum ageing of 18 months for the red wines.

About the vineyard

The Cuvée Classique is made from fruit sourced from across the estate’s various terroirs.

The vines are grown on south-facing terraces stretching out over hilly terrain and the soil is characterised by the presence of fossilised seashells. Clay is found at varying depth and despite being fairly dense, alluvial layers comprised of silt-sand sediment deposits are also present. You might thing that these looser layers in the soils would have little influence on the wine but they provide excellent drainage which helps produce refined, elegant wines.

The land is worked using a combination of traditional, mechanical and manual methods without herbicides. At Tempier they also avoid the use of pesticides and the soil is worked on a regular basis according to the seasons and enriched with compost to improve soil structure and preserve microbial activity.

94 points - Wine & Spirits

The 2014 is dark and earthy, with chocolate density to the plummy fruit and pleasantly gravelly tannins. As it takes on air, notes of garrigue and roasted meat appear, as well as an acidity that recalls plum skin in its firmness and crunch. If you open it now, decant it an hour before serving; it should age well over the next five to ten years."

17+/20 points - Julia Harding
Deep crimson. Rich and darkly fruited but with the savoury, almost meaty character of Mourvèdre, lifted by a tangy cranberry freshness and notable spice. On the palate, really savoury and almost a little sour but in a good way. Surprisingly smooth tannins already but they are deep and firm. Beautifully balanced even though this is just at the start of its journey into complexity."

"An impressive barrel sample, the 2014 Bandol Cuvee Classique shows surprising depth and concentration in the vintage. Notes of dark fruits, mineral and peppery, Provencal herbs all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, elegant 2014"

"This red blend is based on a large part of Mourvèdre (75%). It reveals all the complexity and interest of its terroir : explosive dark fruits, sunny garrigue (thyme, olive), hot rocks, dried wood. The palate shows a great fruit concentration supported by minerals and spices. Young yet so promising tannins!"  4/5 Stars

"Dark purple with deep dark fruit aromas. Smooth, complex. Briary black fruit with an awesome tannic structure. Wonderful."  4.5/5 Stars

"Dark and concentrated earthy and herb dominated flavors. Enjoyed, 4.3 for me."  4.5/5 Stars

"Incredibly tannic, full bodied, complex and historically accurate. Earthy wine. Black cherry, cranberry, pine, wet wood, warm lava rock, mulch, nutmeg, potpourri"  4.5/5 Stars

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
