One of Tuscany’s more esoteric areas, Morellino di Scansano is now counted amongst the best in the region. Their highly manicured Sangiovese vines are notably the most meticulously managed in the territory.

However, the quality in this region is derived from its terroir - the rolling hills and sandy, rocky soils, everything necessary for the making of world-class wines.

Luckily, in the 1980's, at an age of just 20 and when female winemakers were almost unheard of, Elisabetta Geppetti inherited the estate of Fattoria le Pupille and recognised the region's fantastic potential.

With her vision for Scansano and under her enthusiastic management, the estate has become one of Tuscany's leading wineries and has almost single-handedly improved the reputation of the entire region.

The Poggio Valente vineyard — planted with four different clones of Sangiovese — represents Elisabetta Geppetti’s commitment to the Sangiovese grape. Recognised as the best of Morellino di Scansano, it is quite serious value at just £25.95 per bottle - partly because it still remains somewhat 'under the radar'!

2013 was a fantastic vintage for Tuscany, with Monica Larner describing it as a "classic vintage with wines that show enormous power and depth." The Poggio Valente Riserva reflects this perfectly. Elegant and structured yet also powerful and rich, it is a truly fantastic wine and a must-try for any lover of Tuscany!

About the wine

In the glass the wine is a deep ruby red with purple hues. On the nose, the wine is quite aromatic featuring complex notes of concentrated red cherry fruit along with balckberry, some vanilla and touches of sage and violets that hint to its Mediterranean origins. The Poggio Valente is remarkably elegant on the palate whilst being full-bodied and rich with ripe tannins and beautifully soft, dark fruit. Savoury and long on the finish, it has a fresh acidity that would pair well with food. This is lovely to drink right now but it should age wonderfully for a decade or more.

The wine is harvested towards the end of September and is fermented in stainless steel at 26 degrees. It is aged in large oak casks of 500 and 600 litres ebefore being bottled.

About the winery

Elisabetta Geppetti first encountered this family-run estate when she met the man that was to be her husband. She took over at Le Pupille in 1985, aged just 20, when her father-in-law passed away and she managed her first harvest alone. At the time the Scansano area was little known - as was the idea of female winemakers!

Since then her enthusiasm and tenacious character have enabled her to grow Fattoria le Pupille into an estate that is undoubtedly the leader of the Morellino di Scansano DOCG and one of Maremma’s finest estates.

At the heart of the estate are the Morellino di Scansano wines but at the end of the '80s and with the vision that has characterised her wine making career, Elisabetta started making the Maremma's first Super-Tuscan wine, the famous Saffredi.

The most recent addition to the range is the superb single vineyard of Poggio Valente, already making a name for itself.

Le Pupille (the pupils) are the two farmhouses that stand on the peak of two hills facing away from the medieval village Pereta presiding over 75 hectares of vineyards.

About the vineyard

The name Fattoria Le Pupille is unequivocally tied to the production of Sangiovese and this grape is at the heart of the property, making up 70% of the vineyards. It is the soul of the diverse expressions of Morellino made by the winery.

For Poggio Valente, everything began in 1996 when Elisabetta, charmed by this corner of Maremma near Pereta, bought the perfectly-sited Poggio Valente vineyard. Situated 280 meters above sea level on a south-west exposure, the terrain is extremely hilly. The superficial layer of soil is rich in clay and sand whilst underneath there are rocks of sandstone origin. The vines range in planting dates from the early '70s to the early 2000s.

95+ Points - Monica Larner
"
The 2013 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente is a breakthrough wine for Fattoria le Pupille and its talented winemaking team. This is a complete and balanced expression that shows its best side to all the senses: its appearance is richly saturated and bright; the bouquet is intense and complex; and the mouthfeel shows elegance and power. In all, this wine tastes and feels much younger than it really is and I have high hopes for its future aging ability. It shows a great sense of inner energy and liveliness that makes it a pleasure to drink in the near term as well. Soft flavors of black cherry, spice and grilled herb wrap thickly over the palate."

"
Although just racked, the 2013 Poggio Valente Riserva shows Le Pupille's move towards a style that emphasizes nuance and finesse. Some of that is the personality of the year, but the use of larger casks is evident as well. Today (2015), the 2013 is still an infant, but it will be unquestionably fascinating to follow. I can't wait to see what the next year brings."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
