A Vivino exclusive, we are very pleased to be the first in the UK to offer the Gabarda Selección 2015!

From one of Spain's most exciting regions, Cariñena in the north east, the moment we read the review of this wine on Robert Parker's website, we knew we wanted to try it. A sample later and a quick look at the surprising price and we were sold - a perfect wine to offer to Vivino customers.

The Gabarda is a wine of pure enjoyment! Full of juicy red fruit, an earthy complexity and an astonishingly well-balanced concentration and power, it is full of life and energy - the kind of wine you want to go back to again and again.

And a price of just £11.45 means you can do just that. Spain is full of value for money at the moment, but even by its standards, the Gabarda stands out.

Winemake Jorge Navascués says that Cariñena is “one of the areas with the greatest potential of all… it is like a small paradise, flooded with incredible vineyards". If this Gabarda Selección is any indication, then this is a region we will be hearing much more about in the future!

About the wine

Situated midway between Madrid and Barcelona, not far from Zaragoza, the Cariñena wine region is still comparatively unknown, even though it is one of Europe's oldest protected grape growing areas.

This is the home of the Cariñena grape, better known as Carignan, which is grown in soils so stony that even phylloxera couldn't survive here - and many of the vines here are ancient and ungrafted.

Cariñena makes up the majority of the blend in the Gabarda Selección and its lovely red fruit is clearly evident in the wine - as is the energy and freshness that the grape also provides. There are aromas of redcurrant and raspberry mingled with a floral and earthy note. On the palate, this is absolutely charming, full of juicy ripe cherry fruit and a savoury finish. Gabarda is aged for 10 months in oak, but it is well integrated and adds to the wine's complexity. There's a lot to this wine but the fruit is so juicy and the wine so fresh that it balances perfectly. Pure enjoyment and superb value as well!

About the winery

Founded in 1903 Bodegas Ignacio Marin are a benchmark winery in the Cariñena appellation. In 2005, the fourth-generation of the Marin family (two brothers and a sister) branched out to create their own winery - although still while helping run the main Bodega. They named the project Gabarda and built a cutting-edge winery in Longares, Zaragoza.

With the help of Jorge Navascués, a specialist in the Cariñena grape, they acquired old, low-yielding vineyards and began making wines that combined modern technology with all the traditional know-how that had been handed down in the family.

About the vineyard

Grapes are sourced from the El Calabazar vineyard in the Cariñena appellation, in Zaragoza. 40 year old vines are planted on rocky soils, with a southern exposure at an altitude of 700 meters.

90 Points - Luis Gutierrez

"
The youthful and lively 2015 Selección is a blend of Cariñena and 15% Garnacha from vines in the village of Aguarón. The destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel in this first vintage and the wine matured in oak barrels for ten months. It has great character and a floral nose intermixed with rustic touches, very elegant and subtle. The oak is very nicely integrated and folded into the fruit, with great freshness - that's the beauty of Cariñena, the grape! It has great balance and lively, combining power and elegance."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
