"This has definitely become a domaine to watch....understated, stylish and relying more on nuance than overt power” Wine Spectator.

When Côte-Rôtie is at its best, it is one of the world's great Syrah wines - powerful, rich and perfumed.

But very little is made and what is made gets snapped up by collectors worldwide, driving the prices ever higher.  The trick here is to find a winemaker on the up and get in before the rest of the world cottons on.

Julien Pilon is exactly that producer. Already making a name for himself, he is one of the new wave of vignerons in the Rhône, dedicated to making superb quality wines from some of the world's great terroir.

Julien’s original intention was to produce whites only – his discipline lasted precisely two vintages!

Success breeds opportunities. The offer of stylish old-vine Côte-Rôtie fruit from the Bassenon and Rozier vineyards was far too exciting to ignore and the result is a svelte and deep Côte-Rôtie of devastating purity...a complete triumph!

About the wine

A full, dark red colour in the glass, the nose delivers some classic Côte-Rôtie smokiness, ripe black fruits and floral notes that mingle with a black olive tapenade background. It’s immediately engaging and immensely enjoyable. The palate brings cooked plums with spices and more smoky notes. It is a seamless, full-bodied wine framed with some super elegant tannins. A very long spicy, savoury finish leaves you wanting more and the concentration shows of even more to come with some age. Delicious to drink now, give it a good couple of hours in a decanter first.

All grapes are destemmed but not crushed. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats and lasts 3 weeks. The malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrel. Ageing for 18 months in barrel (30% new).

About the winery

Julien Pilon cut his winemaking teeth working at wineries such as Jean Pierre Villa, Mas Amiel, Gaillard and Cuilleron.

Native to the Rhône he was determined to make wine there but not coming from a winemaking family he has had to work hard to secure vineyards in desirable sites.

His first vintage came in 2010 and he has rapidly acquired devoted fans who have fallen for his stylish, precise and balanced wines. He’s definitely a “winemaker to watch” with local estates acknowledging his talent.

"
Alluring, with a gorgeous medley of black tea, singed mesquite and warm olive aromas leading the way, backed by dark cherry and plum fruit that stretches out through the long finish. Shows a strong iron underpinning throughout."

"Bright purple. Heady mineral- and spice-accented aromas of red and dark berries and smoked meat, with a suave floral accent adding complexity. At once juicy and expansive on the palate, offering energetic black raspberry and violet pastille flavors and repeating smokiness. Finishes on a zesty mineral note, with very good clarity and even tannins."

"Deep burgundy color, wonderfully structured, you can sense the harmony coming together, smells of blackberry, blueberry, purple flower, mocha, and clove, full body, firm tannin, tastes of black tea, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and white pepper, long smooth finish, velvety and delicate.4.5/5 Stars

"Fabulous. Ive been looking for a full bodied, but not bone dry red French wine, similar to Italy’s Amarone - and this is it. Lots of body, a little bit of sweetness to support all the fruit - what a wine!"  4/5 Stars

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
