With Burgundy's ever-growing popularity and price, it's getting very hard to find wines that offer value in the region. One way to do so is to find new or under the radar wineries, places making wines that the rest of the world has yet to discover.
But new Domaines in Burgundy are rather a rarity themselves, so we are extremely pleased therefore to offer the superb 2014 Marsannay La Montagne from Domaine Charlopin-Tissier at the excellent price of just £24.99.
Yann Charlopin is the son of legendary winemaker Phillippe Charlopin, whose wines sell as soon as they hit the market. This 2014 is only Yann's second vintage, yet he is already making waves with the help of another Burgundian legend, mentor and friend, Jean-Marie Fourrier.
With experience and help like this, not to mention the sheer quality of the wines, it won't be long until the wider market catches on to the huge potential of this Domaine.
So get in on the ground floor and pick up some up some of this elegant, silky pinot noir before it sells out!
About the wine
There is both good richness and fine detail to this delectable, vividly packed Marsannay. A silky, elegant and pure Pinot Noir with great depth, finesse and excellent concentration. That depth is balanced by a fine bead of minerality and fine-grained tannins on a very persistent finish. A striking Marsannay to drink from 2017-2023.
Yann practices organic farming "we leave it to nature to look after the vines. It’s the vines that make the wine", short fermentation using a ‘maceration à froid’ and a long, gentle elevage on fine lees.

About the winery
Charlopin-Tissier was created when young Yann Charlopin and his wife Justine Tissier purchased the very popular ‘Domaine David Clark’ in the centre of Morey St-Denis. This ‘just thirty’ couple have taken on the existing vineyards – Bourgogne rouge, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Vosne Romanée and Morey St-Denis – and supplemented these in their first vintage with family holdings including this thrilling red Marsannay.
About the vineyard
Montagne is set high above Longeroies, disappearing into the woods above. In fact, according to Yann, its wonderful seclusion makes it a favoured spot for passionate couples. The resulting shade from the trees is compensated by a scorching southern exposure – although this site is very cold in winter, its microclimate makes it suprisingly warm in summer.
About the winemaker
The son of renowned Burgunduian vigneron, Phillippe Charlopin, Yann’s education came from wine school in Beaune – “we learnt the basics but we essentially just had lots of fun” – and, more importantly, working with his father and stints at wineries in Tasmania and closer to home in Sancerre and Chablis … “I was taught different philosophies and methods and learnt that you cannot pre-judge other people wines, each winemaker has their own, different ways to express their terroirs”. Mentored by another legend and close friend, Jean-Marie Fourrier, Yann is making wines that won't stay under the radar for long.
"The 2014 Marsannay la Montagne, which comes from 0.50-hectares of 45-year-old vines with a southerly exposure, has an expressive, quite stony, almost stoic bouquet that only reluctantly reveals its cranberry and raspberry preserve aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of austerity on the finish, their stony soils come through the red berry fruit nicely, leading to a strict and quite linear finish. Give this a couple of years in barrel, because this may transpire to become a more cerebral Marsannay. This has great potential...wines that are lighter in style, fresh and tensile, very terroir-specific and full of energy...this new arrival in Morey-Saint-Denis has a bright future." 90 Points - Neal Martin

Silky on the tongue. Fresh taste of berries with a dry finish" 4/5 Stars
