Spain is quite possibly the world's most exciting wine region at the moment!

Young, innovative wine makers are re-discovering its ancient vines, native grapes and fabulous terroir and all to tremendous effect...

Nowhere is this more true than Catalonia's Penedès region and wineries like Mont Rubí are creating stunning wines that only a few years ago would have been considered impossible.

Today's offer of the HMR White from Mont Rubí is one such wine! This lovely white is made from the Xarel·lo grape (pronounced sha-rel-lo), which is normally found as the main grape in Cava.

Only in recent years have wine makers cottoned onto the potential in this grape and the vibrant, mineral, pure wines that it makes.

The HMR White is the finest example of these wines that we've tried and the price tag of only £14.15 makes it just brilliant value!

We're huge fans but we'll leave the last words to renowned critic Matthew Jukes...

“HMR White is made of xarel.lo and it is the finest still version of this grape I have tasted. It reeks of class, with delicacy, control and length that belie its price. I would pay a lot of money for this wine in a fancy, Spanish, three-star restaurant… With a flavour reminiscent to the local limonera pears, spiked with tart green apples, this is a stunningly pretty wine and it will shock you with its purity.”

About the wine

100% Xarel·lo, the vines for this wine were planted just over 40 years ago and the fruit they produce gives fantastic concentration and complexity.

Water-white in the glass, this is a youthful and vibrantly fruited wine with sweet herbal scents and fresh green fennel at its core. Laden with the fruit notes typical of the variety – green apple, pear, pineapple and faint notes of Spanish Jasmine, the HMR white is a stunner. At once once intensely fruity, whilst remaining lightly herbal and refreshingly mineral, it is beautifully drinkable. It finishes with a length that belongs to a wine 2 or 3 times the price.

A fascinating wine at a great price! What more could you ask for?

Mont Rubí follow biodynamic guidelines and all the processes in the winery are manual - from harvest to destemming and pressing. Minimal sulphur is used and instead the wines are aged on the fine lees which are rich in natural antioxidants.

Fermentation and maturation takes place in a number of different materials, according to the demands of the wine and the vintage. These include egg-shaped cement tanks, ceramic amphora made from locally sourced calcium rich clay as well as French oak barrels of various sizes and toast levels.

About the winery

Lying just 40 miles west of Barcelona, Mont Rubí and its vineyards stand at over 600 meters above sea level in the Catalan PreCostal range.

The name MontRubí was created in 1984 in honor of the 19th century property in L’Avellà that the Peris family refurbished to house the winery. “Mont” relates to the mountainous surroundings and distinctive method of viticulture, while “Rubí” was taken from the name of the municipality of Font-Rubí where the winery and vineyards are located.

The philosophy of the winery is to support traditional, sustainable viticulture, which is respectful of the environment, seeking balance between its grape strains and the environment, and at the same time incorporate new technology. In the winery, all of the production processes are designed and controlled to avoid intervention as much as possible, using minimal quantities of sulphites and using their own antioxidant lees.

About the vineyard

HMR White is a monovarietal Xarel·lo wine from vineyards planted in 1974. The nutrient poor soils at high altitude in Alt Penedés are ideal for this versatile variety.

Viticultural practices at MontRubí are sustainable and environmentally friendly with only non-chemical treatments for the vines. The team allow natural ground cover to grow to promote soil regeneration.

A joyful Catalan dry white. Very fresh and rather exotic, with an extremely inviting pink-grapefruit and floral nose. Super fresh and juicy with a long, crisp finish. Invitation accepted."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
