"Anyone who enjoys white Bordeaux will (a) love this wine and (b) be utterly astonished by this wine" Joe Fattorini, The Wine Show

Today's offer is slightly off the beaten track. But it shouldn't be. Greece is producing some brilliant wines at the moment and Ktima Chora, although relatively new, is now counted amongst the best, garnering world-wide acclaim for their wines.

The newly released and newly arrived from Greece, Ovilos 2017, is a stunning barrel-aged blend of Semillon and the native Assyrtiko grape. This is a tropical version of a top white Bordeaux from the Graves - not surprising when one of the winemakers studied with Denis Dubourdieu, famed for his white Bordeaux.

Aromatic on the nose with a superb weight and creaminess on the palate from the Semillon, the Assyrtiko gives the wine a freshness that keeps everything in balance.

This 2017 has yet to be tasted by the critics, but we believe it is the equal (and perhaps even the better) of the 2016 vintage that received such praise from the great and good of the wine world.

£24.50 is great value for a wine of this quality - something of equal calibre from Bordeaux would cost at least double the amount!

About the wine

Enticing aromas of ripe peach, vanilla and flinty notes combine with a vibrant burst of fresh grapefruit. A wonderful weight and creamy texture on the palate with notable minerality. The Semillon adds the weight and the roundness whilst the Assyrtiko provides the wonderful freshness. This is a tropical version of a top white Bordeaux and would be stunning paired with rich fish dishes or creamy sauces.

The grapes were picked at optimum maturity and then carefully selected. The wine was vinified in the state of the art winery, using state-of-the-art technology to ensure the aromatics and varietal flavour profiles were retained. Each variety was vinified separately and then matured in 225 litre French oak barrels for a period of eight months. This wine went through a full malolactic fermentation, enhancing the creamy texture of the final blend.

About the winery

Biblia Chora is the innovative creation of Vangelis Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis, two of the most talented winemakers in Greece. The winery was established in 1998 and the privately owned vineyard lies on the cool climate slopes of Mount Pangeon, at Kokkinochori near Kavala. It has been farmed organically since day one. These exceptional, cutting edge wines are some of the best white wines in Greece, which have similarities to very good white Bordeaux – not surprising as Vassilis studied with Denis Dubourdieu; the king of modern white Graves.

About the vineyard

The vineyard is cultivated according to strict ecological agricultural standards in order to respect the environment. The density of the planting is 4,000 plants per hectare. All work in the vineyard is carried out by hand. The soil is rocky, with limestone and clay, providing good levels of drainage.

"Intense fruity and herbal aromas sit alongside stone fruit and some creamy notes in the mouth. Long, layered and precise, the palate offers roasted almonds, flowers, exuberant fruit and a very long finish. Outstanding stuff. This is a gastronomic and promising wine with lashings of character and class."

"A classy blend of Greece and white Bordeaux with white flowers, gentle oak and stone fruit. An elegant palate with lemon freshness and a silky texture."

94 Points - Mark Squires (2016 vintage)
...It is sometimes rather thrilling—in structure it is pretty brilliant. There is nothing about this that is understated this year. Rather, it is fresh, precise and enlivening, with fine grip on the long finish. It is hard to believe it has any wood—it is very pure. It is also beautifully concentrated for this style..."

17.5/20 Points - Julia Harding (2016 vintage)
Subtle oak presence on the nose, creamy, touch of spice, so that the mineral and citrus notes show through. Piercing freshness and impressive length, via pure citrus fruit on the palate. Tightly structured within the richness of the barrel ferment. Very good balance of fruit and winemaking."

"Exceptional white from a great winery of Greece, Biblia Chora. Crispy and aromatic, with balanced acidity"  5/5 Stars

"Great, complex flavour, bright tropical fruit, apricot, flowers and honey. Rich taste with a pleasant citrus zest. A nice finish and excellent aftertaste"  4.5/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
