“Goodness me this is an incredible wine...Track it down now!"

As soon as we read Matthew Jukes' fantastic praise for this Salice Salentino Riserva, we knew we wanted to offer it to Vivino customers!

Thankfully, we were able to secure a parcel of this terrific value wine and can offer it today for just £11.75 per bottle - some price for a mature Italian red that is drinking perfectly.

Laden with succulent, dark, spicy fruit and deliciously intense with a velvety texture, this tastes like a wine at two or three times the price.

Those Vivino reviewers who have tasted it are full of praise for the value for money this wine represents and we are entirely in agreement.

This is the kind of value that should not be missed!

About the wine

Full-bodied and beautifully balanced this predominantly negroamaro wine (with 20% malvasia nera) has pronounced aromas of black fruit, jam and spice all of which carry through to the velvety-smooth palate that has notes of coffee bean and vanilla that enhance the ripe fruit. With great concentration and a lovely, soft finish, this is seriously good value for money!

Paolo Leo is a winery intent on showing the best of Puglia’s indigenous grape varieties and they’re pairing careful vineyard management with cutting-edge technology in the winery to do the job. This oak-aged Riserva is a blend of negroamaro (80%) and malvasia nera that were harvested from traditional bush vines.

Grapes were harvested from vines around Lecce and once in the winery were fermented in stainless steel. The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and then a further six in large oak barrels. There then followed four months in stainless steel and another four in bottle before the wine was released on to the market.

As a Riserva wine, the rules state that the wine must be aged for at least two years before it can be sold.

About the winery

Paolo Leo is a modern company, established in 1989 with the aim of making characterful, quality wines from some of Salento’s indigenous grape varieties: primitivo; negroamaro; malvasia bianca; malvasia nera and nera di lecce.

The winery is substantial, covering an impressive 15,000 square meters and equipped with a state-of-the-art vinification system. Whilst the benefits of the latest technology are fully embraced, the team at Paolo Leo are constantly mindful of the area’s traditional vine growing and winemaking tradition and aim to combine the best of both worlds.

About the vineyard

Puglia has a long-established history of grape growing; the region’s Mediterranean climate and fertile soils lending themselves to successful viticulture.

In recent times producers like Paolo Leo have moved away from bulk wine production and sought to increase grape quality in the vineyard by lowering yields and improving viticultural practices. At Paolo Leo harvesting across their 30-hectare property is done by both hand and machine.

Grapes for the Salice Salentino Riserva comes from four hectares of old bush vines.

“Goodness me this is an incredible wine. This is another example of a fully mature Italian wine which is made by a great company and the price is incredibly fair. Deep, dark, powerful and brooding, this is a mesmerising wine which shows no signs of slowing down. Track it down now!”

The Riserva category for Salice Salentino denotes two extra years of aging. Indeed, the 2011 Salice Salentino Riserva (80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nera) shows budding complexity in the form of smokey granite, cola and tobacco. Those more ethereal tones add new layers and extra nuance to the solid wall of black, jammy fruit that makes up the core of this wine. The mouthfeel is ripe, soft and chewy."

"A well balanced red from Puglia. Fruity and opens up very well after 15 min or so to deliver a smooth and relaxing finish. A great wine for the price! 4/5 Stars

"Surprisingly pleasant and dark red from Puglia. Really recommended and great value for the money 4/5 Stars

"Wow, bought this on the back of a Matthew Jukes write up, and he's bang on, it's fantastic. Incredible value for money, hence 5 stars. Snap it up while you can"  5/5 Stars

"Bags of fruit! Mix of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera from 25 to 35 yo vines. Full bodied, medium+ acidity and solid tannin. Not the last word in refinement but excellent concentration and good complexity. Plums, strawberries and almost stone fruit on the palate. Hints of chocolate and vanilla. Medium length. Nice to find balanced, interesting wines at this price point"  4/5 Stars

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
