Today's offer is a real discovery!

A fascinating, delicious, gutsy red from Macedonia...

With a Platinum award for the best red in the region and a 97 point score from Decanter (not to mention 4.2 stars from Vivino reviewers), this unusual wine is brilliant value at just £18.90 per bottle.

Located in the Tikvesh region of central Macedonia, the Tikveš estate sustainably cultivates indigenous varieties and their Barovo red is made from vranec (pronounced VRAN-ash) and kratoshija (pronounced krat-oss-SHEE-yah).

Kratoshiya is genetically identical to Italy's famous primitivo (aka zinfandel), whilst the literal translation of vranec is ‘black stallion’, referring to the grape’s natural strength. You’ll not be surprised then that this is a richly flavoured wine with deep notes of plum, cherry, chocolate and spice.

A region and wine that deserves to be much more widely known, we can only offer a few cases - don't miss them!

"It’s one seriously sexy fruit bomb that stays balanced and even elegant. It’s an impressive wine and worth your time and money" Jeb Dunnock

About the wine

Tikveš make use of one of France's greatest consultant winemakers, Philippe Cambie (a man even named in 2010 by Robert Parker as the world's best)and it shows in the wine!

A blend of 65% kratosija and 35% vranec, Barovo shows complex and elegant aromas of blackberries, plums and cherries combined with subtle hints of cedar, vanilla and toasty notes. On the palate, the wine has great concentration and is beautifully textured, smooth yet meaty with lots of rich black fruit against a spicy, mineral backdrop. Superbly balanced and suprisingly elegant, Barovo finishes with great length and persistent sweet dark fruit notes. A brilliant wine and one that needs to be tried!

To make Barovo, the grapes were cooled for 12 hours, then destemmed, crushed and cold macerated for three days. Vinification took place over the course of 25 days, with regular pumping over taking place in a pneumatic press which was followed by malolactic fermentation. 80% of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 15 months, followed by a minimum of six months bottle ageing.

About the winery

The Tikveš winery was founded in 1885 and has made wine through world wars, the independence of the Balkans and the fall of communism – the latter perhaps being the most critical for the property because at this time it was privatised.

With investment (close to 30 million euros of it!) came up-to-date technology, improved practices both in the cellar and the vineyard, where an increasingly sustainable approach has been adopted.

With the help of consultant winemaker, Philippe Cambie, Tikveš' winemaking is a very modern affair with temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation tanks and both concrete and French oak barrels used for ageing.

About the vineyard

The vineyard from which the grapes are harvested is a hilly site with a south-eastern orientation.

The vines are planted in well-drained volcanic soils that are rich in carbonates and minerals. Vines were green harvested before veraison in order to further concentrate the grapes’ flavours.

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
